Experimenting with AI for Engaging Lab Safety Lessons

This past year, I’ve started using AI to improve my communication with families, especially when it comes to writing emails or letters. As someone with a very direct personality, I’ve always struggled with written messages sounding too blunt or overly formal. Using AI has helped me find a more balanced tone, still professional, but with a softer and more approachable voice. So far, I’ve mainly used it to assist with parent communication, but recently I decided to branch out.

Since I haven’t experimented much with using AI for lesson planning, I decided to explore ChatGPT’s Secondary Science Teacher tool to see how it might help me create more engaging lessons aligned with my sixth-grade science curriculum. I chose to focus on a unit I always begin the year with: lab safety.

Each year, I mix up the activity I use to teach students the rules and procedures for working safely in our science labs. I enjoy keeping things fresh—but sometimes I just need a new spark of creativity. So I asked ChatGPT to suggest a fun, interactive project to help students internalize lab safety in a memorable way.

The result? A project called "Lab Safety Superheroes." In this activity, students design and present their own superhero who models safe lab behavior and calls out unsafe practices. The AI provided a detailed plan that included:

  • Clear learning goals

  • A list of required materials

  • Step-by-step instructions with estimated time frames

  • Extension activities

  • Differentiation strategies for multilingual learners and advanced students

After generating the full lesson structure, ChatGPT even asked if I’d like a rubric. Naturally, I said yes and then took it a step further and requested printable templates for the superhero and a comic strip. To my surprise, it delivered exactly what I had in mind! I was genuinely impressed with how quickly and thoroughly the AI generated everything I needed. I even tried to stump it with the template request, but the results were solid and classroom-ready.




This experience may mark the beginning of a new chapter in how I approach lesson planning and project development. While I still believe in the power of personal creativity and teacher intuition, it’s clear that AI can be a valuable tool to support and streamline the process, especially when looking for something new, engaging, and aligned with best practices.

    This is amazing! I think I discovered through my experience with Chat GPT that it is a better tool when you don't have something specific in mind. When I have gone to use it to create a resource that I had a vision for, it usually takes longer than if I may have created it on my own. I think here is a great example of it being a fabulous tool for whole activities or exercises though! What a great tip!
